Parish News: October - December 2018
Residents of the Woodward Hills Nursing Home were serenaded by the Sunday School on Saturday, December 14. Led by our Director (Dr. Bessy Despotis), Sunday School teachers, and parents, the youth went room-to-room singing Christmas carols and handing out ornaments crafted by the children. Many thanks to all our young people, parents, and volunteers who helped with this joyous occasion.
On Sunday, Dec. 15 our Sunday School celebrated the annual Christmas Play. This year's theme was "Charlie Brown Christmas." Special thanks to Mrs. Kristin Ryeson for organizing and directing the event!
The Saint George Greek School had its annual Christmas Pageant on Saturday, December 14. Several families and friends were present to enjoy the beautiful performance put on by the children. A special "Thank you!" to our Greek School Director (Mrs. Penny Gryparis) and all the wonderful teachers who make this possible.
ARIANA MARIE KAPATAIS (born Oct. 8, 2018) was given her 40-blessing on Sunday, November 18 with family and friends present. We celebrate the birth of this child with her parents, Richard and Fallon Kapatais. May the blessing of the Lord and His mercy be with your family on this special day!
Ariana is scheduled to be baptized at the parish on Sunday, Jan. 20 following the Divine Liturgy.
On Sunday, October 28, the Saint George Choir paid a special visit to the Pines of Clarkston Memory Care Facility to perform for the residents there, including one of our own long-time parishioners, Mr. Ken Davis, who was also celebrating 60-years of marriage to his beloved wife, Martha Davis. Many thanks to all those who coordinated and participated on this wonderful occasion!
On Saturday, October 27, nine parishioners prepared dinner at Ronald McDonald House for families whose children are at Children's Hospital in Detroit. Thank you to Labrini & Amalia Liakonis, Kathy Mellas, Kay & Anna Nicholas, Melissa & Amalia Pardales, Jeanne Savas and Kathy Sheiko for making beef brisket, greek salad, mashed potatoes, rice pilafi, roasted vegetables, spanakopita, cookies & brownies. Once again, all of the families we met were very appreciative for the home cooked meal we made for them.
Members of our Saint George GOYA group met for some friendly dodgeball competition at the Assumption Church in St. Clair Shores, MI. Several parishes from the Metropolitan Detroit area participated. Many thanks to our GOYA parish advisors Melissa Pardales and Demetra Koukios who helped organize and provide transportation for the event.
On Saturday, October 13, Instructor Dale Brown from the Threat Management Center gave a 90-minute talk to a group of 22 parishioners about safer ways to understand and manage all levels of aggressive interactions or violent conflict. He briefly spoke about (and demonstrated) some disarming techniques involving firearms and knives, as well as state laws that might be important for citizens to know when dealing with violent conflict. ELENI SUSAN LIONAS was baptized into the Body of Christ on Sunday, October 7, 2018, with the baptismal name "Eleni" (Ελένη). The Sacrament was witnessed by several family members and friends. We welcome Eleni to the Church and pray that God bless her, the Lionas family, and Eleni's Godparents (Elizabeth Bara and Zachary Peers)!
MORGAN GRACE ANTHONY was baptized into the Body of Christ on Saturday, October 6, 2018, with the baptismal name "Panayiota" (Παναγιὡτα). The Sacrament was witnessed by several family members and friends. We welcome Morgan to the Church and pray that God bless her, the Anthony family, and Morgan's Godparents (Alex Almond and Emily Warren)!
